It feels great when you get new product images from a professional photographer or download a beautiful, pin-sharp photo from a stock page.

However, uploading these 5-10 megabytes of print quality images (often 4000-5000 pixels wide) to your website without modification will drastically slow down the loading speed. And a slow page won’t be loved by your visitors or Google’s search engine. We show you how to use the Media Library to keep your site lightning fast!

Step by step: Preparing and uploading images

Resize the image (Before uploading!) Before uploading anything to WordPress, you need to make the image smaller. For this, you can use any simple image editor (Paint, Mac Preview, Canva). Articles of Association: You almost never need an image larger than 1920 pixels (Full HD) width on a website. If the image is only included in a blog article or as a product photo, it is enough to Width between 800 and 1200 pixels.

Optimize file size (Compression) After resizing, the file size (how many megabytes of the image) should also be reduced. An image for the web ideally Not more than 200-300 Kilobytes (KB). You can use online, free image optimization tools such as TinyPNG or a Squoosh, which reduce the file size so that it remains undetectable to the naked eye.

Upload an image to the Media Library If the image is already the right size, in the WordPress admin interface, in the left menu, select Media > Add New menu item. Simply drag and drop the prepared file into the box marked with the dotted line or click Select files button. [Screenshot location: In the Media -> Add New interface with the "Put files here" box]

Completing the ALT Tag (Alternative Text) – SEO and Accessibility Once you've uploaded the image, click on it in the Media Library. In the right column you will see a Alternative text (ALT tag) field. Write here briefly (in 1-2 sentences) what can be seen in the picture. This is essential for Google’s Image Search (SEO) and for visitors who use screen readers. [Screenshot location: Details of an open image in the Media Library, highlighting the “Alternative Text” field with a red arrow]

Insert image in post/page If you want to use the image in a blog post, in the text editor, click + icon, select Image block, and then the Media library opportunity. Here you just need to select your already uploaded image. [Screenshot location: Select Image Block in Gutenberg Editor]

💡 Common Error: Images in Text Editor

Never paste (copy-paste) images directly from the Word document into the WordPress editor! Although it works many times, it generates incorrect formatting and huge code junk in the background, which can cause problems later. Always save images as files (JPG, PNG, WebP) on your computer and upload them via the Media Library as described above.

Do you want an automatic solution?

If you work with a lot of images and don’t have time to optimize them one by one, you can request the installation of a professional, server-level image optimization plugin (e.g., ShortPixel or Smush). It automatically resizes and compresses files when uploading, plus converts them to the modern and lightning-fast WebP format.

Open a ticket to peterteszary.com Support Genix interface and I will set up such an automatic system on your website!

One of the most common reasons why a website or webshop loads slowly is to look for images that are not properly uploaded.
