#5 – What are the categories and why are they important?
2023.07.12.
Categories are a built-in WordPress taxonomy type used to group content hierarchically. Categories allow you to organize your website content, such as blog posts, news, products or other types of content, into logical and thematic groups.
Below is a summary of the main features and functions of categories:
- Hierarchical structure. This allows for logical grouping of content and easy navigation through the website.
- Grouping by content type. For example, on a news portal, the categories could be “Sports”, “Politics”, “Art”, etc., while on an online store, the categories could be “Men’s Clothing”, “Women’s Clothing”, “Shoes”, etc.
- When you create new content, you have the option to assign one or more categories to a post or page. This makes the content easy to find on the website and for visitors.
- WordPress allows you to add categories to the top or side menus, so visitors can easily select content that matches their interests.
- SEO benefits: using categories can also help with search engine optimization. Well-structured categories and relevant categorization of content can improve a website’s SEO performance by making it easier for search engines to find.
You can easily add, edit or delete categories in the admin interface. However, it’s important to consider the appropriate use and structuring of categories according to the content and goals of your website.
