What is the difference between a page and a post?
In WordPress, pages and posts are basically two different types of content that you can use when creating your website. Although both are suitable for displaying content, there are some important differences between them. Here are some features that distinguish between pages and posts:
- Hierarchy and structure: Pages are arranged in a hierarchical structure, which means that you can create subtitles and subpages. For example, if you create a page called ‘Services’, you can create subtitles under ‘Webdesign’, ‘Graphic Design’ and ‘Online Marketing’. This allows for logical grouping and clarity of content. However, the entries appear independently of each other and do not have a hierarchical structure.
- Type of content: Pages usually contain content that remains constant and static over time. Typical pages are "About us", "Contact us" or "Frequently asked questions". These pages contain basic information, business data or a general description of the business. Posts, on the other hand, appear in a fresh chronological order and are usually in the form of blog posts or news.
- Label and category: Labels and categories can be added to entries to help you group them and find them more easily. Labels are keywords that characterise a post (e.g. ‘health’, ‘technology’ or ‘travel’), while categories are broader groupings (e.g. ‘sport’, ‘recipes’ or ‘art’). Pages cannot be assigned labels or categories, as they usually do not contain content that changes over time or is related to a category.
- Menu system and navigation: The pages are usually part of the main menu and sub-menu of the website, which help navigation. These elements are intended to make the pages available to visitors. Entries do not appear directly in the main menu, but rather appear on the blog page or in the timeline where you can read the latest entries.
- Functionality and customization: Although both pages and posts can be customized, pages usually have fewer setup options. A number of specific settings are available for posts, such as enabling featured images, comments, or managing post labels and categories.
Both pages and posts are important in the content management of the website, and it depends on the content to be used which one is worth using. Pages are linked to permanent content and the structure of the website, while posts contain fresh information, news or blog posts in chronological order.
