What is an SSL certificate good for?

The SSL protocol (Secure Socket Layer) provides encryption and authentication for communication between two communicating parties (e.g., client and server).

For example, when we provide credit card information or personal information on a website, the SSL certificate provides us with assurance that this information will not be leaked or transferred to third parties. This is why it is especially important for sites where some kind of exchange of information takes place to have an SSL certificate.

With the SSL certificate, our data is encrypted, which can only be unlocked by the receiving party. In this way, we can ensure that the data is not stolen.

Since August 6, 2014, Google has prioritised SSL-certified sites, so search engines such as Google rank higher than sites that don't.

If the page you are visiting has an SSL certificate, we can make sure that in our browser, at the place where we enter the URL, i.e. the address of the website, we can see a tiny padlock in the closed state. If you click on this padlock with your mouse, you can get more information about the certificate.

SSL-certified pages are no longer available with http://, but with https://. Also thanks to the SSL certificate protocol.

Providers usually make SSL certificates available to websites for an annual or monthly fee, which can range from 2500 HUF to 10,000 HUF per year.

I will write more about the type of certificates in another article.
